Roland-Garros: Hurkacz through to third round

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, the No 8 seed, advanced to the third round of Roland-Garros by edging out American Brandon Nakashima in a rain-interrupted match in Paris.

Hurkacz eventually prevailed 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (5) on Thursday to move into the round of 32. This is the third year in a row that the Pole has advanced to the third round of the clay court Grand Slam.

Hurkacz, ranked No 8, will face the winner of the match between Canadian Denis Shapovalov and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 25 seed, next.

The Pole defeated Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki (4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3) in the previous round of the tournament.

Earlier in the week, Nakashima, ranked No 84, won against wildcard Nicolas Moreno De Alboran (6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-2).
