Roland-Garros: Gauff sweeps aside Stephens to reach first Grand Slam semi-final
Coco Gauff defeated Sloane Stephens 7-5, 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon. She’ll play Italian Martina Trevisan in the next round
No 18 seed Coco Gauff reached the last four of Roland-Garros by winning against Sloane Stephens 7-5, 6-2 at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris on Tuesday afternoon.
Gauff, ranked No 23, will face Italian Martina Trevisan next for a place in the final.
It all comes a year after the teenager reached the quarter-finals in Paris but lost to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova – a match she found so frustrating she smashed a racquet.
Gauff defeated Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino (7-5, 6-0), Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck (6-1, 7-6 [4]), Estonian Kaia Kanepi (6-3, 6-4) and Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 31 seed (6-4, 6-0) in the previous rounds, while Stephens, ranked No 64, won against German qualifier Jule Niemeier (5-7, 6-4, 6-2), Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 26 seed (3-6, 6-2, 6-0), Frenchwoman Diane Parry (6-2, 6-3) and Swiss Jil Teichmann, the No 23 seed (6-2, 6-0).
