American Coco Gauff, the No 6 seed, reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros by winning against Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-5, 6-2 in Paris on Monday.

Gauff improves to 2-0 lifetime against Schmiedlova, whom she also beat on clay in Madrid last year. This is the third year in a row that Gauff has made it to the quarter-finals in Paris.

Gauff, ranked No 6 in the world, could play world No 1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek in a repeat of last year’s final in the quarters. The Pole meets Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko in another fourth round match.

This was Gauff’s 37th consecutive win against a player ranked outside the top 50. The last time she lost to a player outside the top 50 was at the 2022 Australian Open (lost to 110th-ranked Qiang Wang).
