Roland-Garros: Veteran home hope Gasquet battles to victory over Coric

French wildcard Richard Gasquet advanced to the second round of Roland-Garros by battling to a hard-fought three-set win over Borna Coric, beating the Croat 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2), 6-4.

The Frenchman, a former French No 1, is still a fan favourite in Paris, and he delighted a packed Suzanne Lenglen with an excellent win over the talented Coric.

“I knew it was there. It was there,” said Gasquet of his victory, and the role the French crowd played. “That’s where the crowd is really buoyant, if I can say, when you need them from A to Z, and they were there. That’s very important.

“It puts pressure on the opponent, and for you it gets you more stamina and energy, and that was essential for me to have this court.”

Gasquet, ranked No 124, will play the winner of the match between American Christopher Eubanks and Italian Jannik Sinner, the second seed, next.
