Roland-Garros: Fruhvirtova sisters move into second round of qualifying
Both the Czech sisters won their first round matches in qualifying in straight sets on Monday
The Fruhvirtova sisters – Linda and Brenda – both kicked off their campaign to qualify for the Roland-Garros main draw with first round wins on Monday.
17-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova, now the higher-ranked of the two Czech sisters at No 90, scored a 6-0, 6-3 win over Slovak Viktaria Hruncakova. She will next take on 19-year-old American Robn Montgomery, who defeated Eketerina Makarova 6-1, 6-2 in another first round contest.
The younger of the two sisters, Brenda, qualified for Roland-Garros last year before losing in the first round against Elena Rybakina. She also qualified for the Australian Open main draw in 2023 and 2024.
The older of the two sisters, 19-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova, also won on Monday, scoring a 6-4, 6-2 win over Iryna Shymanovich. Ranked inside the top 50 in June 2023, the Czech is now down to No 146 in the world. This is the first time since the 2022 US Open that she has not received a direct entry into a Grand Slam main draw.
Linda Fruhvirtova will also face a Slovak next – the 16th seed Rebecca Sramkova. The Slovak, fresh off her fourth-round finish in Rome last week, defeated Sarah Iliev 6-4, 6-1 to move into the second round in Paris.
