Roland-Garros: French interest in singles ends as Rune beats Gaston to set up last-16 clash with Tsitsipas

Dane Holger Rune defeated Frenchman Hugo Gaston 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to move into the last 16 of Roland-Garros.

Rune, ranked No 40, will play Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, next.

In the previous rounds, the 19-year-old Dane won against Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 14 seed (6-3, 6-1, 7-6 [4]) and Swiss Henri Laaksonen (6-2, 6-3, 6-3).

Gaston was the last French player in the singles competitions. Ranked No 74, he beat Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 19 seed (4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 [4]) and Argentinian lucky loser Pedro Cachin (6-4, 6-2, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
