Roland-Garros: Four of the top 6 women’s seeds are out as Muchova ousts Sakkari
Sakkari’s loss means that four of the top six women’s seeds are out; Krejcikova (2), Kontaveit (5) and Jabeur (6) had already lost in the first round
The women’s draw at Roland-Garros saw another huge upset on Wednesday with fourth seed and last year’s semi-finalist Maria Sakkari going down to Czech Karolina Muchova in the second round.
Muchova, a former world No 19 but currently ranked 81st after an injury break, needed almost two-and-a-half hours to defeat Sakkari 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4).
The win equals Muchova’s best performance at the French Open – she also reached the third round in Paris last year. The 25-year-old has been a semi-finalist at the Australian Open (2021) and a two-time quarter-finalist at Wimbledon (2019 and 2021).
Sakkari after Krejcikova, Kontaveit and Jabeur
Muchova was the more consistent player on the day, hitting 34 winners to 22 unforced errors, while Sakkari hit 37 unforced errors as compared to just 31 winners.
Sakkari’s loss means that four of the top six women’s seeds are out; Barbora Krejcikova (2), Anett Kontaveit (5) and Ons Jabeur (6) had already lost in the first round. 10th seed Garbine Muguruza also lost in round one while 12th seed Emma Raducanu lost in the second round earlier on Wednesday.
The Czech will next meet 27th seed Amanda Anisimova for a place in the fourth round with the American following up her win over Naomi Osaka with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Croatian qualifier Donna Vekic 6-4, 6-1.
