Roland-Garros: Easier day for Tsitsipas, crushes Ymer to book spot in last 16
Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Mikael Ymer 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday and will play the winner of the next match between Dane Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune and Frenchman Hugo Gaston in the next round.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, defeated Swede Mikael Ymer 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 to move into the last 16 of Roland-Garros at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris on Saturday afternoon.
It was his first straight-sets win of the tournament, following a five-set match in the first round against Lorenzo Musetti, and four against Zdenek Kolar in the second round.
“It’s a good thing to have a match like this every now and then, I think,” he said in his press conference afterwards. “Especially when you come in, when you walk into a match with so much confidence and believe that you can really structure your tactics and you feel the confidence of your game itself, having built up through the matches before, having played a lot of rallies but having been in a lot of situations in a match, you are able to kind of awaken the mind a little bit and see the best opportunities and possibilities for yourself.
“So for sure it was a good performance in ways. I know it wasn’t as long as my previous matches, but that’s why we have practice, so we can go back and practice either today or the next day or whenever it comes.”
Tsitsipas, ranked No 4, will play the winner of the match between Dane Holger Rune and Frenchman Hugo Gaston next.
Earlier in the tournament, Ymer, ranked No 95, won against Australian James Duckworth (6-2, 6-4, 6-2) and No 29 seed Daniel Evans (6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3).
