Australian Alex de Minaur, the No 11 seed, beat Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 to move into the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in Paris on Monday afternoon.

De Minaur becomes the first Australian man to reach the Roland-Garros quarter-final in two decades – since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.

He hit 51 winners compared to 40 unforced errors, with Medvedev managing 27 winners compared to 42 unforced errors.

The Russian sought some medical attention early on in the second set for what appeared to be a problem with blisters, which may well have hampered his movement.

But he refused to blame his defeat on that issue.

“I had a blister, it didn’t help me to call the physio, but I had a blister that got a little irritated so needed to take care of it,” he told a press conference afterwards. “No, Alex played better. To be honest, I’m disappointed to lose, but I don’t have anything to tell myself in a tough way like I was not, I don’t know, good attitude today or I was not fighting till the end. I did all of this. He played better.”

De Minaur, ranked No 11, will play the winner of the match between German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, and Dane Holger Rune, the No 13 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the Australian won against American Alex Michelsen (6-1, 6-0, 6-2), Spaniard Jaume Munar (7-5, 6-1, 6-4) and German Jan-Lennard Struff (4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3).

Medvedev, ranked No 5, won against German Dominik Koepfer (6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3), Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (6-1, 5-0 ret.) and Tomas Machac (7-6 (4), 7-5, 1-6, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Roland-Garros 2024.
