Roland-Garros: Cocciaretto into last 16

Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto moved into the last 16 of Roland-Garros by winning against Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 17 seed, 7-6 (4), 6-2 at Roland-Garros in Paris on Friday.

Cocciaretto, ranked No 51, will play the winner of the match between American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, and Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, the No 30 seed, next.

In her on-court interview, Cocciaretto spoke briefly in French, saying: “To be in the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time is extraordinary,” in quotes translated by Tennis Majors.

The Italian beat Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 13 seed (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) and Spaniard Cristina Bucsa (6-1, 6-4) ahead of her victory.

In the previous rounds, Samsonova, ranked No 17, won against Pole Magda Linette (6-1, 6-1) and American Amanda Anisimova (6-2, 6-1).
