Avanesyan upsets Zheng in Roland-Garros third round
Elina Avanesyan outlasted Qinwen Zheng in a three-set thriller at Roland-Garros on Saturday. Avanesyan will next meet either Jasmine Paolini or Bianca Andreescu.

Elina Avanesyan upset Qinwen Zheng, the No 7 seed, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to advance to the last 16 at Roland-Garros on Saturday afternoon. Avanesyan advanced after two hours and 52 minutes.
The Russian led by a double-break at 5-2 in the third set but failed to serve out the match with either chance. She did well to hold at 5-6 to force a tiebreak, during which she had the upper hand almost the entire way.
Avanesyan, ranked No 70, will now face the winner of the match between Canadian Bianca Andreescu and Italian Jasmine Paolini. The 21-year-old previously knocked off China’s Lin Zhu (6-2, 6-4) and Russian’s Anna Blinkova (6-3, 6-0).
Earlier in the tournament, Zheng — the 2024 Australian Open runner-up — defeated French wildcard Alize Cornet (6-2, 6-1) and German Tamara Korpatsch (6-2, 6-2).
