World Tennis League: Medvedev helps Eagles to solid lead over Falcons
There is still all to play for ahead of Sunday’s final of the World Tennis League
Daniil Medvedev put the Eagles into prime position in their World Tennis League tie against the Falcons, pairing up with Andrey Rublev to beat Taylor Fritz and Sunit Nagal in the men’s doubles, 6-4.
“I’m trying to do my best, and today I made better volleys than previous days!” laughed Medvedev when asked about his net play.
Earlier, Vera Zvonareva joined Team Falcons for the day, stepping in for the ill Elena Rybakina, and paired up with Sorana Cirstea for the women’s doubles against Mirra Andreeva and Sofia Kenin.
It meant 39-year-old Zvonareva was up against a player more than half her age in 16-year-old Andreeva.
And in an entertaining clash, the Falcons saved one match point but could do nothing to stop Eagles coach John-Laffnie de Jager calling the first time-out of the tournament, after which Kenin raced to the net and sent a fine shot across the court to conclude a 6-4 win.
It means the Eagles are 12-8 up in the tie ahead of the singles matches and closing in on a spot in the final if they can maintain their lead.
