Auger-Aliassime sends Kites flying high, beats Kyrgios in World Tennis League
In the latest mixed invitational exhibition, the Canadian’s team took the honours on Day 1
Felix Auger-Aliassime got the job done for the Kites on the first day of the World Tennis League, beating Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 6-3 to take his team to a 35-27 triumph over the Eagles at the end of the day.
Kyrgios had been on court in the first match of the day, partnering Bianca Andreescu against Kites’ Holger Rune and Eugenie Bouchard to a 6-2, 6-3 win (Eagles 12-5 Kites).
But Kites’ Iga Swiatek had set things up nicely for Auger-Aliassime, by beating Eagles’ Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-4 (Kites 12-7 Eagles), to leave the score at Eagles 19-17 Kites heading into the final match of the day.
And the women’s world No 1 had backed her team-mate to complete the comeback, saying: “I think Felix is the one who is more solid, so he got this.”
And the Canadian closed the gap after the first set, which he took 7-5 after losing the first three games.
Then he took his team into the lead by taking the second set 6-3 and thus securing a win plus the five bonus points for the day’s cumulative winners.
