Olympic silver medallist Marketa Vondrousova and top 10 player Hubert Hurkacz have both withdrawn from the Paris Olympics due to injuries.

Vondrousova, who also won the Wimbledon singles title last year, is currently hampered by a hand injury which also plagued her during her opening round loss at the All England Club this year.

“I am very sorry, but due to health reason I will not be participating in this year’s Olympic Games in Paris,” Vondrousova said in a statement on social media. “I hoped until the last moment that I could go at least in doubles, but problems with my hand won’t allow me on the court.”

Katerina Siniakova, who won the doubles gold at the Tokyo Olympics, will replace Vondrousova in the singles event while Linda Noskova will play doubles with Karolina Muchova in Paris.

With Vondrousova pulling out, both women who reached the singles final at the Tokyo Olympics won’t be in Paris. Tokyo singles gold medallist Belinda Bencic is also not in Paris as she recently gave birth to her first child.

Hurkacz fails to recover from injury he sustained at Wimbledon

On the men’s side, world No 7 Hurkacz has pulled out due to a knee injury that also cut short his Wimbledon campaign this year.

“My rehabilitation is going very well, and I am making continuous progress. However, my team and I have decided that I am unable to compete in the Olympic Games in Paris,” Hurkacz said. “This was a very, very difficult decision because I have always dreamed of representing Poland at the Olympics, being able to win a medal for the national team, but unfortunately, my health does not allow it this year.”

Hurkacz, who was also scheduled to play men’s doubles with Janek Zielinski and mixed doubles with women’s world No 1 Iga Swiatek at the Paris Olympics. It remains to be seen if he can be replaced by another Polish player based on the qualification rules.
