Swiatek and Hurkacz sink France, send Poland to United Cup final
Poland’s big names have risen to the occasion in Sydney, with Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz sending their nation to the United Cup final on Saturday
Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz both won their respective singles ties at the United Cup on Saturday, giving Poland a 2-0 victory over France in their semi-final clash in Sydney.
Hurkacz was on court first, where he squared off against France’s Adrian Mannarino, with the veteran coming into the tournament off the back of a career-best year in 2023. His wily game was no match for Hurkacz’s big serving, however, as the world No 9 saw him off 6-3, 7-5 to gain Poland a 1-0 lead.
Swiatek then looked in trouble when she conceded a 1-0 set lead against Caroline Garcia. The Frenchwoman came out playing aggressive tennis that paid dividends early, before Swiatek found her own range and dismantled the former world No 4 6-1, 6-1 in the remaining two sets to claim the match.
Next up, Poland will face either Australia, who beat Serbia in their quarter-final, or Germany, who edged past Greece yesterday. These two countries will battle it out on Saturday evening in Sydney for a spot in the final.
“Australians play some amazing tennis, especially here in Australia,” Hurkacz said of the upcoming semi-final between Australia and Germany.
“Obviously around the world they play amazing tennis, but I would definitely say it gives them some extra energy, so it will be interesting tie today for Germany, but we’ll be resting and chilling and watching them battle now.”
