Gauff, Fritz power USA to United Cup quarter-finals
USA defeated Croatia 3-0 on Tuesday with winning contributions from Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz
Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz powered the USA to the quarter-finals of the 2025 United Cup by making winning contributions to their team’s 3-0 victory against Croatia on Tuesday (December 31) in a Group A match at Perth’s RAC Arena.
Fritz started the proceedings for his side against Croat Borna Coric. He defeated Coric 6-3, 6-2 in a little over 90 minutes, hitting five aces and converting three break points. Following the ATP No. 4’s effort, Gauff took the court against Donna Vekic and prevailed 6-4, 6-2 in an hour, 30 minutes. She broke Vekic’s serve four times and fired as many aces during the match.
“I’m really happy with how I played today,” Gauff said in her on-court interview. “She’s a great player, and the Olympics [Paris 2024] loss hurt, so I definitely was thinking about it today as motivation to do better.”
The American duo then teamed up to down Petra Marcinko and Ivan Dodig 6-2, 6-3 in the mixed-doubles duel and sweep the Croats.
After the success with Gauff in mixed doubles, Fritz expressed his liking for the category, saying:
I’ve always really enjoyed playing mixed doubles, we don’t get to do it that often so it is fun to kind of do things we don’t normally do all the time.
The result meant USA finished as Group A leaders followed by Canada and Croatia.
