Olympics: Auger-Aliassime/Dabrowski win mixed doubles bronze medal
The Canadians defeated Dutch duo Wesley Koolhof/ Demi Schuurs 6-3, 7-6 in the bronze medal match on Friday
Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski have claimed the bronze medal in the mixed doubles competition after a hard-fought straight sets win over Dutch duo Wesley Koolhof/ Demi Schuurs.
Auger-Aliassime/ Dabrowski won the first 6-3 and looked set to cruise after going up a double break to lead 3-0 in the second. However, Koolhof/ Schuurs fought back to level the set at 4-4 and then extended the set to a tiebreak.
Auger-Aliassime/ Dabrowski held off the resurgence from the Dutch duo to win the tiebreak and complete the 6-3, 7-6 (2) win in one hour and 33 minutes.
This is the first Olympic medal for both Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski. Auger-Aliassime, who lost to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles semi-final earlier in the day, will also compete in the bronze medal men’s singles match where he will meet either Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Musetti.
This is also Canadia’s second Olympic medal in tennis, and their first since Sydney 2000 when Daniel Nestor & Sebastian Lareau won the men’s doubles gold medal.
