Laver Cup: Cobolli and Struff announced as alternates for Team Europe
Both have had strong seasons, with Cobolli making a career-high ranking and Struff winning his maiden title
Italian Flavio Cobolli and German Jan-Lennard Struff have been announced as the two alternate players for Team Europe in this week’s Laver Cup in Berlin.
The pair will make their debut at the competition if either is required to play, with neither having been selected previously.
For Cobolli, he has made a stratospheric rise up the rankings in the past 12 months, surging from outside the world’s top 100 to No 32 in the world currently. The 22-year-old holds a 31-24 win-loss record this season, with wins over the likes of Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Struff, currently ranked No 37, became one of the oldest-ever first time titlists on the ATP Tour this year when he won the BMW Open in Munich, beating Auger-Aliassime, Holger Rune and Taylor Fritz en route to the title.
Cobolli and Struff join six others already named in the main Team Europe squad:
- Alexander Zverev
- Carlos Alcaraz
- Daniil Medvedev
- Casper Ruud
- Grigor Dimitrov
- Stefanos Tsitsipas
Bjorn Borg will be captaining Team Europe for the last time this week, with the Swede handing over to Yannick Noah for the 2025 edition.
