“It has been a goal of mine to make the team & I can’t wait to be a part of it” – Rune to make Laver Cup debut this year
Rune joins Rublev and Tsitsipas in Team Europe, who have won four of the five editions of the tournament so far
Denmark’s Holger Rune will suit up for Team Europe and make his debut at the Laver Cup in September. The sixth edition of the tournament will be held in Vancouver, Canada from September 22 to 24 at the Rogers Arena this year.
Rune, a former junior World No 1, is currently ranked No 7 in the world. He won his first ATP Masters title in Paris in November after beating five top 10 players. He also reached the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters this year and won the Munich title last week.
Rune is the third person to be named in the Team Europe squad as he joins world No 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas and world No 6 Andrey Rublev in the six-player team.
“I’m so honored to be part of Team Europe in Vancouver this year,” said Rune. “I’ve watched Laver Cup over the past few years and love the event. The competition is so intense and getting to really know the personalities of your rivals so unique. It has been a goal of mine to make the team and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
Holger Rune has proved he is more than capable of beating the world’s best – Team Europe captain Bjorn Borg
Team Europe, winner of four of the five editions of the Laver Cup thus far, will be captained by 11-time Grand Slam champion Bjorn Borg.
“Holger has had a really impressive season and is one of the leading players of the next generation,” said Borg. “He’s proved he is more than capable of beating the world’s best and I am looking forward to welcoming him to Team Europe in Vancouver.”
Four players have also been named in the squad for Team World, who won the event for the first time last year. Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, and Australia’s Nick Kyrgios will aim to defend the title in September.
