The last semi-final spot at UTS Guadalajara came down to sudden death of Saturday’s nightcap at the Centro Panamericano de Tenis. David Goffin – “The Wall” – secured second place in Group B by beating Flavio Cobolli 14-13, 11-16, 12-15, 25-10, 2-0.

Goffin won the first two points in extra time to advance.

“It feels amazing,” the Belgian assured, “especially in the night session, last match of the day, to finish in sudden death. The level was really good. I’m really happy. It was a great night.”

It was a rough exit from UTS Guadalajara for Cobolli, who lost both of his matches on Saturday in sudden death. The Italian had previously fallen to Tomas Machac in extra time.

“He played better on the important points, the last two,” Cobolli said of Goffin. “I like this format, but I’m not happy because I’m not in the semi-finals. But I will come back (to UTS)…if they want me. For sure now I’m focused on Acapulco; maybe it’s gonna be better there.”

The semi-final lineup is set, with Goffin facing Casper Ruud at 4:00 pm before Machac goes up against Adrian Mannarino at 5:00 pm. Winners of those matches will meet for the championship at 6:30 pm.
