Ymer brothers give Sweden shock win over Argentina as Davis Cup Finals begin
Mikael Ymer and Elias Ymer kicked off the Davis Cup with wins over Diego Schwartzman and Sebastien Baez respectively
The Davis Cup Finals began on Tuesday and began with a bang as Sweden clinched a shock win over Argentina in Bologna.
Mikael Ymer clinched van unassailable 2-0 lead with a brilliant 6-2, 6-2 win over world No 17 Diego Schwartzman, following his brother Elias’s 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) win over Sebastien Baez.
Australia win opener in Group C
Jason Kubler and Alex de Minaur won their singles matches as Australia began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Belgium.
Kubler beat Zizou Bergs 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 and De Minaur then crushed David Goffin 6-2, 6-2. The Australian pair of Matt Ebden and Max Purcell then joined forces to beat Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-1, 6-3.
Canada were playing Republic of Korea in Group B while the Netherlands were taking on Kazakhstan in the day’s other matches.
Spain, led by US Open champion and new world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz, Britain, Serbia – without Novak Djokovic – and the United States are among the other teams due to play later this week.
