Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz said it has been hard to find the positives from his short US Open campaign but he is determined to give his best for his country at this week’s Davis Cup Finals Group Stage.

Alcaraz played both the singles and doubles rubbers in Spain’s 3-0 win over Czechia on Wednesday.

The world No 3 found the going tough against Tomas Machac in the second singles rubber after Spain had won the first match.

Machac won the first set in a tiebreak but an injury he picked up hampered him and the Spaniard quickly won the second set 6-1 before the Czech player decided to forfeit the match early in the third set.

“I started a bit nervous. I had a few opportunities, I didn’t take them but I was strong mentally and kept fighting. I tried to keep calm, positive in the difficult first set. Then to keep on the pressure and I think for that reason he (Machac) might have felt physical problems,” Alcaraz said as quoted by the Davis Cup website.

Alcaraz then combined with Marcel Granollers for the doubles where they beat Jakub Mensik and Adam Pavlasek 6-7(2) 6-3 7-6(2) to complete the 3-0 win.

“I’m first of all really happy with playing a good match in singles and a pretty good match in doubles. I’m a little bit tired, I’m not going to lie. I tried to take the positive things about my losses in the United States, it has been really tough to find, but I found it,” he added.

“Trying to not make the same mistakes about my level and in the mental side here. Trying to be a little bit more mature, to improve a little bit. I’m here with a lot of energy, excited and have motivations to keep going here, to try to be the best No.1 possible for Team Spain and get as much wins as I can as a team.”

Spain’s next tie in the competition will be against France on Friday. Czechia meets Australia on Thursday. The top two nations from this group move to the Final 8 stage in November.
