Sinner caps off dream week by clinching Italy’s second Davis Cup title
Italy won its second Davis Cup title on Sunday, sweeping Australia 2-0 behind wins from Matteo Arnaldi and Jannik Sinner. Australia also finished runner-up in 2022.
Jannik Sinner capped off an incredible week at the Davis Cup Finals by carrying Italy to the title of tennis’ team competition on Sunday evening in Malaga, Spain. Sinner secured a 2-0 sweep of Australia with a 6-3, 6-0 rout of Alex de Minaur in the second singles rubber.
On the heels of Matteo Arnaldi’s 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Alexei Popyrin, the two singles matches were enough to give Italy it’s second-ever Davis Cup title and first since 1976.

“It has been an incredible feeling for all of us,” Sinner said on court following the triumph. “Obviously we are really happy…. Yesterday we were one point away from being out; now we are celebrating.”
Sinner goes 5-0 in singles and doubles
Sinner’s success on Sunday put the exclamation point on a perfect week in Malaga. The world No 4 won all three of his singles rubbers and also won a pair of doubles matches with Lorenzo Sonego. Sinner also beat Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in the quarter-finals and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the semis.
Against Djokovic, Italy was one point away from being eliminated from the competition when Sinner was triple match point down on serve at 4-5, 0-40 in the third set. He managed to dig out of that hole and pull off an improbable 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 upset of the world No 1.
Sinner and Sonego then defeated Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic in the decisive doubles rubber. The Italian pairing also beat Greikspoor and Wesley Koolhof in the quarter-finals.
Back-to-back runner-ups for Australia
This marks the second consecutive season in which Australia has finished runner-up in the Davis Cup competition. The Aussies lost to Canada 2-0 in the 2022 final. De Minaur also fell in the clinching singles rubber in that tie, 6-3, 6-4 to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
