Dan Evans got Great Britain off to the best possible start with a quickfire straight-sets win over Peter Gojowczyk of Germany in the second Davis Cup quarter-final.
The world No 25 was in scintillating form as he swept to a 6-2, 6-1 victory, breaking his opponent in the final game and seizing his first match point to put his nation one up.
In less than an hour, Evans racked up some impressive stats – 88 per cent of his first serves won, no double faults, and five of his eight break point opportunities won. Conversely, he did not concede a single break point to Gojowczyk, playing his first Davis Cup tie in seven years.
“I didn’t play great the other day,” he admitted. “I decided to stay cross-court a lot of the match and give myself a big opportunity if I was going to go down the line. I worked really hard. That was the story of the match.
“Probably some of the best tennis I’ve played all year!”
