Jannik Sinner put on a dominant display of tennis by beating Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-1 in 72 minutes to level the tie v Argentina at 1-1, with a deciding doubles waiting.

Defending Davis Cup champion’s Italy were in a heap of trouble, having lost the opening singles match via a Lorenzo Musetti loss to Francisco Cerundolo. To stay alive in the tournament, they would require a win in the next singles match, and who better to rely on than the World No 1, who possesses a 2024 win-loss record of 70-6.

The Italian didn’t disappoint, breaking Baez in his second service game, and cruising on his own serve. It took six set points on Baez’s serve to finally clinch the first set, but it was clear that Baez’s relatively weak serving would simply not cut it against the world’s best player, especially on this quick court.

The second set was even better for Sinner, breaking the Argentine twice, and saving all four break points at 4-0 to take the set 6-1.

Overall, Sinner hit 17 winners, whilst Baez only had seven. The serve differential was clear both visually and in the stats, with the Italian winning 71 percent of his first points, with the Argentine down at 46 percent.

After the match, Sinner said:

“I’m happy with this victory, now anything can happen in doubles. It’s nice to come back here, I have a lot of good memories from last year.”
