Alcaraz shines as Spain sweep Czech Republic at Davis Cup Finals
Alcaraz played one of the points of the year against Machac on Wednesday
Carlos Alcaraz made a successful return to Davis Cup action on Wednesday, with the 21-year-old representing his country for the first time since 2022 as Spain swept the Czech Republic 3-0 in Valencia.
Alcaraz took on Tomas Machac in his singles tie, falling behind the set to the world No 35. After he dug deep to win the second set, Machac was forced to retire due to cramp with the match level at 6-7 (3), 6-1, 0-0.
“After a really difficult and tough first set, I knew that I had to stay tough, stay positive and play long rallies,” explained Alcaraz of his victory over Machac.
“I think he played more matches in the American swing. He played tough matches in New York. Then coming here, different conditions, different everything. It’s difficult to get used to.”
The pair played one of the points of the year before Machac left the court, with Alcaraz showing his incredible defence to chase down a drop volley from the 23-year-old and produce one of his own.
Roberto Bautista Agut also won in singles, beating Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (1), 6-4. Alcaraz then returned in the doubles alongside Marcel Granollers to edge Jakub Mensik and Adam Pavlasek in a deciding set tiebreak, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (2).
“It’s a special feeling for me playing here in Valencia, Davis Cup. I missed last year,” Alcaraz added. “This year, I’m really excited about it.”
Spain will take on France in their next tie this Friday, with the French fighting to stay alive in the Davis Cup Finals after falling 2-1 to Australia on Tuesday.
