In front of a fervent home crowd, world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz came good in the Davis Cup, beating Soonwoo Kwon 6-4, 7-6 (1) to win the vital point that secured Spain’s place in November’s finals.
He was helped out by Roberto Bautista Agut, who won the day’s opening singles match over Hong Seong Chan 6-1, 6-3.
They are joined in the last eight teams by Croatia, who progressed despite not hitting a ball. Sweden could have gone through had they beaten Italy 3-0 – but when Matteo Berrettini beat Elias Ymer 6-4, 6-4, Croatia knew their spot was assured.
Eight nations will now compete for the Davis Cup in Malaga in November.
