Sorribes Tormo, Bucsa clinch bronze medal for Spain
Early breaks in each set the Spanish pair on their way to a convincing victory over Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova
Sara Sorribes Tormo and Cristina Bucsa clinched a bronze medal for Spain as they outplayed Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova, beating the Czechs 6-2, 6-2 in the women’s doubles at the Olympics in Paris on Sunday.
The eighth-seeded Spaniards – who won the Madrid Open together in May – were rock solid throughout and seemed to have all the answers as they sealed a brilliant victory, Sorribes Tormo finishing it off with a brilliant forehand volley.
Early breaks key for Spanish success
Noskova was broken in the first game as the Spanish pair, full of energy, imposed themselves on the match from the start. Muchova and Noskova held their own for a while but a second break, this time of the Muchova serve, helped them to secure the opening set.
It was the same pattern in the second set as Noskova was broken again in the opening game, a second break making it 3-0. The Czechs got one break back but Sorribes Tormo and Bucsa marched through the second set, breaking Muchova again for good measure and then closing things out to love.
Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani of Italy were due to play Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider, Russians playing under a neutral flag, in the gold medal match later on Sunday.
