Ostapenko first women’s seed to fall at Olympics, US women in a hurry on day two
The American women won four out of four singles matches on Sunday
Jelena Ostapenko has become the first seed eliminated from the women’s singles event at the Olympics, with the Latvian losing 6-4, 6-3 to Camila Osorio on day two in Paris.
The No 10 seed was thoroughly outplayed by Osorio, with the Columbian receiving strong support on Court 6 as she claimed her first-ever Olympics victory.
Rising star Mirra Andreeva also fell on day two, with the Russian going down 6-3, 6-4 to Magda Linette, just days after winning her maiden title on the WTA Tour.
Gauff in a hurry as USA completes first-round sweep
Second seed Coco Gauff faced no issues in her opening match, as the American raced past Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic with ease, prevailing 6-3, 6-0.
In doing so, Gauff became the youngest female player from the United States to win a singles match at the Olympics since Venus Williams 24 years ago in Sydney. Williams went on to win gold.
It was a strong day for the American women, with Emma Navarro, Jessica Pegula and Danielle also winning in straight sets to make it four from four for the US quartet.
No 11 seed Navarro sped past Austria’s Julia Grabher for the loss of just two games, No 5 seed Pegula saw off Viktorija Golubic 6-3, 6-4, while No 8 seed Collins was up 6-3, 2-0 when Lara Siegemund retired from their first-round match.
Other results saw seeds Barbora Krejcikova, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Leylah Fernandez all pushed to third sets, with Krejcikova edging Sara Sorribes Tormo 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(2), Haddad Maia overcoming Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 and Fernandez winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
Some of the women’s matches were a little more one-sided on day two, however.
Qinwen Zheng and Maria Lourdes Carle doubled-bagelled Sara Errani and Tatjana Maria respectively, while Maria Sakkari almost managed the same, beating Danka Kovinic 6-0, 6-1 on Sunday.
