Andy Murray was due to play the last singles tournament of his career at the Olympic Games (27 July – 4 August). His body told him no, as it did at Wimbledon. Gold medallist in 2012 and 2016, the Scot will take part in the doubles with compatriot Daniel Evans.

“I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,” a statement from Murray read.

“Our practice has been great and we’re playing well together.”

The record books will show that Murray’s last singles match ended in retirement at Queen’s against Jordan Thompson. Now aged 37, he had confirmed that he would end his career after the Olympic Games.

His singles withdrawal follows those of Jannik Sinner, who is ill, Holger Rune, who has a wrist injury, and Hubert Hurkacz, who is still nursing a knee injury after withdrawing from Wimbledon.
