Angelique Kerber: I want to play mixed doubles at the Paris Olympics with Zverev
Angelique Kerber will join the ranks of mothers on tour when she returns in 2024
Angelique Kerber is on the comeback trail at the age of 35, and has big plans for 2024.
In an interview with German media outlet Bild, the former world No 1 discussed her hopes for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris – including the discussions she hopes to have with Alexander Zverev about competing in the mixed doubles.
“When we meet in Australia we will definitely talk about it,” she said in quotes translated by Tennis Majors. “I would be happy about that! The Olympics in Paris are the highlight and playing for Germany is always an honour.”
The 2016 silver medallist added that, like Zverev, she would like to be the nation’s flagbearer in the opening ceremony, saying: “An Olympic opening always gives me goosebumps, which is why I was there in London and Rio too…I’m happy to always be able to experience that. It would be indescribable for any athlete to walk in with the German flag. Everyone would feel proud there. And so it is also a dream of mine.”
Kerber gave birth to her daughter Liana in the summer of 2023, and is intending to travel on the tour with her, inspired by the success of other mothers before her.
“In the end everyone has to find their way and their rhythm. But Caro Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina, just to name two, played great after their return. That was impressive. I’m looking forward to it and will have to find my own way. This will be the biggest challenge of all time and without patience it won’t work.”
