The opening tie of the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals between Poland and Spain has been postponed due to a severe weather warning.

The two nations were due to play in Malaga at 17:00 local time, but has been postponed until at least Friday after warnings of heavy rain and possible flooding in southern Spain.

Two weeks after flash floods caused devastation in eastern Spain, several areas of the nation are on alert again as fresh rounds of heavy rain sweep in.

“This decision has been made based on guidance from the relevant authorities to ensure the health and safety of all participants and attendees,” said a spokesperson for the International Tennis Federation, which organises the event.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”

Spain’s leading player, Paula Badosa, has donated 50% of her recent prize money to people affected by the Valencia floods.
