Surging Gauff flies past Parks into round of 16 at Australian Open
Coco Gauff won against Alycia Parks 6-0, 6-2 on Friday night. She’ll play the winner of the match between Pole Magdalena Frech and Russian qualifier Anastasia Zakharova in the next round
Coco Gauff’s Grand Slam winning streak hit ten matches on Friday as the American powered past compatriot Alycia Parks 6-0, 6-2 in a blink-and-you-missed-it 61 minutes.
The 2023 US Open champion played squeaky clean tennis, using her guile, consistency and experience to pull away from Parks early on the match, and never looked back.
Gauff, ranked No 4, will play the winner of the match between Pole Magdalena Frech and Russian qualifier Anastasia Zakharova next.
“I’m really happy with the way I played today,” Gauff said. “The scoreline [doesn’t tell the story], she’s a tough player, hits the ball big, and I’ve known her since I was like eight or nine years old, probably even younger than that. This is our first time playing in juniors or pros, hopefully we can have many more matches in the future.”
As for the present, it was all Gauff, who dropped just ten points on serve and converted all five break points she saw to improve to 8-0 on the season and 10-4 at the Australian Open.
Ahead of her victory, Coco Gauff won against Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (6-3, 6-0) and Caroline Dolehide (7-6 (2), 6-2).
Parks, ranked No 82, edged out Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur (2-6, 6-2, 6-4) and won against Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 32 seed (7-5, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
