World No 1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner beat American Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to move into the last 16 of the Australian Open.

It is the Italian’s fourth consecutive appearance in the fourth round in Melbourne, and marks his 10th consecutive win at the year’s opening Grand Slam after clinching his maiden major title at this tournament 12 months ago.

In truth, this match rapidly turned into a low-key affair as it became increasingly apparent that Giron was no match for the world No 1.

An early break set the tone for the contest as Sinner serenely moved into the second week courtesy of five breaks of serve.

Despite the comfortable nature of victory, Sinner is adamant that in order to successfully defend his crown this year, he needs to improve as we move into the business end of the tournament.

“”First of all I’m very happy to be in the next round. Each match has its own difficulties. I felt like today he was very solid from the back of the court when he served well, especially the first serve.

“I struggle a little bit to return. I still have room to improve but every win is great, especially in these conditions. Thank you for the support, it’s amazing to play night sessions here and lets see what’s coming now in the next round.

“Today the percentage of my net game was not really good but I try to improve, sometimes I feel certain things are a little bit better, sometimes a bit worse but that’s normal. Trying to stay there mentally which is the most important aspect but for sure if I want to go on in this tournament I have to improve. I have to raise my level but I am still very happy.”

Sinner, ranked No 1, will play the winner of the match between Serb Miomir Kecmanovic and Dane Holger Rune, the No 13 seed, next.

The Italian won against Chilean Nicolas Jarry (7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-1) and Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate (4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025, Giron, ranked No 46, edged out German Yannick Hanfmann (2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 7-5) and defeated Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4).
