Djokovic: “I don’t know how long I can expend so much energy!”
Novak Djokovic has worked hard to adapt his game and physicality to deal with the young guns
Many have suggested that Novak Djokovic is now – as he heads towards his 37th birthday – in prime physical condition.
And in a recent interview with L’Equipe, he revealed how his nutrition has helped with his fitness.
“I had problems with my stomach for a few years and when I resolved that, I felt physically and metabolically better, I was able to start getting stronger,” he said. “I was too skinny because of this problem. And to counter these young guys on the circuit who are hungry, strong and motivated, I need to be solid, to be able to adapt to the aggressive style, especially on fast surfaces.”
Be that as it may, though, the world No 1 is also very well aware that even the best diet and hardest work is not going to hold off the hand of time for too long.
He explained: “I know I can defend very well. But I don’t know how long I’m going to be able to keep up this defensive tennis and expend so much energy.
“I’m 36 now. I know I’ve got to get closer to my line, try to serve and volley, vary more. That’s going to help me push these young guys more and try to stay at the top of the game longer.”
Djokovic plays Alexei Popyrin in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday.
