Baez beats Galan in Australian Open second round

Sebastian Baez, the No 26 seed, beat Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Wednesday. Baez advanced after three hours and 14 minutes.

Baez, ranked No 29, will face Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 4 seed, in the last 32. Sinner defeated Jasper De Jong earlier in the day.

In round one Baez benefited from a retirement by American J.J. Wolf (3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 3-0).

In the previous round, Galan — ranked No 87 — beat Australian wild card Jason Kubler (2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (8)).
