Second seed Jabeur out, Vondrousova books spot in third round vs. Fruhvirtova
Marketa Vondrousova won against Ons Jabeur 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 on Thursday. She’ll face Czech Linda Fruhvirtova in the next round
Czech Marketa Vondrousova beat Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the second seed, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 to reach the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Thursday.
“After the surgery, coming back into the big tournaments… You never know how you’re going to do in a tournament” said Voudrousova, ranked No 86. “I felt good, but the draw was super, super tough.”
“Then also the late matches and everything, you know, it was kind of crazy. So I’m just very happy to get the win. Yeah, just stay alive”.
Vondrousova – Fruhvirtova next
The match started at 1:00 am, and even before Murray – Kokkinakis became completely crazy, the 2019 Roland-Garros runner-up stated that it might be too late for the athletes. “At this level, you have to be ready for every point, I don’t think it’s very healthy” she said. “But it’s night session, so you have to prepare for it. Like, the days before were very crazy. You know, they suspended for the heat and then the rain, so I stayed here, like, for 12 hours. Then I continued the (first round) match yesterday, and now three sets again.
Vondrousova, ranked No 86, will face Czech Linda Fruhvirtova next. “She was with me two times in the Fed Cup team, I knew her quite a lot, but we never played”, she said. “We practiced a few times. She’s a great hitter. I think she’s playing amazing for her age also, so it’s going to be tough match. I think she has nothing to lose.”
In the previous round, the Czech edged out American Alison Riske-Amritraj (5-7, 6-1, 6-4).
Jabeur, ranked No 2, won against Slovenian Tamara Zidansek (7-6 (8), 4-6, 6-1) before this early loss, the second in four Slams for the world No2.
