Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, defeated Chilean Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-1 to move into the second round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Monday.

Little separated the two across the opening two sets, with Sinner’s ability to lift his game in tiebreaks the deciding factor.

The Italian has now won 29 consecutive sets, is on a 15-match win streak, and extends his tiebreak record over the last 52 weeks to 27-8.

“I’m very happy to be back,” Sinner said after the match. “Thank you so much for coming. The atmosphere was amazing.

“I think today was a very close one. He’s an incredible player. Huge potential. I’m happy with how I handled a tough situation in the first couple of sets. Happy to be in the next round.”

Jarry tests Sinner with high-octane tennis

Jarry took a high-risk, high-reward approach over the course of the two-hour, 40-minute match, striking 40 winners but making 50 unforced errors, while Sinner hit just 24 winners and 12 unforced errors.

The Chilean had his chances, but Sinner’s consistent ability to get one more ball back in play saw points end in error’s from Jarry’s racquet more often than not.

Sinner, ranked No 1, will face the winner of the match between Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate and Japanese Taro Daniel next.
