Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open by defeating Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 14 seed, 6-1, 6-2 at Melbourne Park.

The last time they met in a Grand Slam Andreeva upset Sabalenka – at Roland-Garros last year – but at no stage during their one-hour, two-minute match on Rod Laver Arena did that look likely on Sunday.

The No 1 seed was in control throughout, playing near-flawless tennis for all but five minutes of the second set, where she allowed Andreeva a look at breakpoints.

Sabalenka delighted with level vs Andreeva

“Always tough matches against Mirra, she’s so young but plays such great tennis,” Sabalenka said afterward.

“I’m super happy to get through this difficult match in straight sets. I’m super happy with the level today.”

The victory means Sabalenka has now won 18 hardcourt matches in a row, making her the youngest player to achieve the feat since Serena Williams in 2004.

She also establishes herself as the most consistent Grand Slam performer on the WTA Tour, making her 10th quarter-final since 2020, more than any other woman.

Sabalenka, ranked No 1, will face the winner of the match between Croat Donna Vekic, the No 18 seed, and Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the No 27 seed, next.

Earlier in the tournament, the Belarusian won against American Sloane Stephens (6-3, 6-2), Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (6-3, 7-5) and Dane Clara Tauson (7-6 (5), 6-4).

Andreeva, ranked No 15, beat Marie Bouzkova (6-3, 6-3), Japanese Moyuka Uchijima (6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8)) and Pole Magdalena Frech, the No 23 seed (6-2, 1-6, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2025 season.
