Australian Open: Rublev beats heat and Thiem to reach second round

Russian Andrey Rublev defeated wildcard Dominic Thiem in straight sets on a scorching day at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

The fifth seed needed two hours and 11 minutes to beat the 2020 Australian Open finalist and 2020 US Open champion 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on the John Cain Arena.

Temperatures already hit over 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) early on Tuesday and is forecasted to rise as high as 36 degrees Celsius.

“I know that he’s going through not easy times … I wish him to come back to the level he can be at as fast as possible,” Rublev said during his on-court interview about his opponent and good friend.

Rublev, ranked No 6 and aiming to reach the semi-finals at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, will face the winner of the match between Australian qualifier Max Purcell and Finn Emil Ruusuvuori next.
