American Jessica Pegula, the No 5 seed, advanced to the second round of the Australian Open by beating Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino 6-2, 6-4 at Melbourne Park.
Pegula, ranked No 5, will play Frenchwoman Clara Burel next.
