Australian Open: Paul advances to last 16

American Tommy Paul, the No 12 seed, defeated Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 7-6, 6-2, 6-0 to reach the last 16 of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Friday night.

Paul, ranked No 11, will face the winner of the match between Jakub Mensik and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina next.

Ahead of his victory, the American won against Australian Christopher O’Connell (6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-5) and Japanese Kei Nishikori (6-7 (3), 6-0, 6-3, 6-1).

Carballes Baena, ranked No 57, edged out Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the No 23 seed (1-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (1)) and won against Australian James Duckworth (6-4, 6-2, 7-5) earlier in the tournament.
