Frenchman Gael Monfils beat German Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Monday.

Monfils, ranked No 76, will play Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 30 seed, next.
