Australian Open: Mertens advances to second round

Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 25 seed, reached the second round of the Australian Open when Egyptian Mayar Sherif retired on Monday at Melbourne Park.
Mertens, ranked No 28, led 6-2, 2-0 when Sherif, ranked No 58, pulled out of the first round match.
The Belgian will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and American Claire Liu next.
