Australian Open: Mensik advances to third round, knocks out sixth seed Ruud

Jakub Mensik edged out Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 6 seed, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.

It is Mensik’s fifth win against a player ranked in the Top 10, giving him a 5-4 head-to-head record against them.

Mensik and Joao Fonseca are the first two male teenagers to defeat players ranked in the Top 10 since Novak Djokovic and his now-coach Andy Murray did it at Wimbledon in 2006. 

Mensik, ranked No 48, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 29 seed, next.

In the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025, Jakub Mensik beat Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili (6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3).

Ruud, ranked No 6, won against Spaniard Jaume Munar (6-3, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1) in the first round of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2025.
