Australian Open: Medvedev breezes past Auger-Aliassime to reach last 16
Daniil Medvedev beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 and will face Portuguese Nuno Borges in the next round
Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open by defeating Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 27 seed, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 at Melbourne Park.
After an epic contest in the previous round that finished past 03:30 in the morning, Medvedev had a much more straightforward path into the fourth round as he dispatched the Canadian in straight sets, looking comfortable throughout.
Medvedev, ranked No 3, will play Portuguese Nuno Borges next.
The Russian benefited from the retirement of French qualifier Terence Atmane (5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0) and recovered to beat Finn Emil Ruusuvuori (3-6, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-0) ahead of his victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Auger-Aliassime, ranked No 30, won against Austrian Dominic Thiem (6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 5-7, 6-3) and French qualifier Hugo Grenier (6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2).
