Australian Open: Lys sets up Swiatek meeting in last 16

German lucky loser Eva Lys advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open by defeating Romanian Jaqueline Cristian 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at Melbourne Park on Saturday.
With the win, Lys became the first women’s singles lucky loser to book her spot in the Australian Open fourth round since 1988.
It required Lys to toil hard for two hours, 28 minutes to beat Cristian. She couldn’t fire any aces but was able to convert five break points and hit 34 winners.
Lys, ranked No 128, will play Pole Iga Swiatek, the second seed, next.
The German won against Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell (6-2, 6-2) and edged out Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2025 season.
Earlier in the tournament, Cristian, ranked No 82, edged out Croat lucky loser Petra Martic (6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7)) and beat Italian Lucia Bronzetti (7-5, 7-5).
