American lucky loser Denis Kudla moved into the second round of the Australian Open by winning against Russian Roman Safiullin 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6), 6-3 at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.

Kudla, ranked No 108, will play Ugo Humbert next.
