Australian Open: Khachanov holds off Kovacevic

Karen Khachanov, the No 15 seed, moved into the third round of the Australian Open by beating American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.

Khachanov, ranked No 15, will play the winner of the match between American Frances Tiafoe, the No 17 seed, and Tomas Machac next.

The Russian edged out German Daniel Altmaier (5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3)) in the previous round.

In the first round, Kovacevic, ranked No 101, outlasted Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (6-7 (2), 7-6 (7), 1-6, 6-1, 6-3).
