Australian Open: Kasatkina moves into last 16
Daria Kasatkina defeated Yulia Putintseva 7-5, 6-1 on Saturday and will face American Emma Navarro, the No 8 seed, next
Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 9 seed, advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open by beating Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, the No 24 seed, 7-5, 6-1 at Melbourne Park on Saturday.
It’s Kasatkina’s first time qualifying for the last 16 at Melbourne Park.
The Russian needed only an hour, 21 minutes to claim the win. She did it by hitting 15 winners and breaking Putintseva six times.
Kasatkina, ranked No 10, will play American Emma Navarro, the No 8 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the Russian won against Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova (6-1, 6-3) and Chinese Yafan Wang (6-2, 6-0).
Putintseva, ranked No 23, defeated Armenian Elina Avanesyan (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) and Chinese wildcard Shuai Zhang (6-2, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
